Srinagar, February 26, 2026 : Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Thursday said India must free itself from a colonial mindset to emerge as a global leader in innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.
Addressing the 21st convocation ceremony of University of Kashmir, Radhakrishnan urged graduating students to believe in India’s own strengths and capabilities.
“As graduating students, I urge you to focus on Swadeshi innovation—solutions rooted in Indian knowledge, resources, and needs. We are not inferior. The first thing we must do is throw out the colonial mindset,” he said.
Highlighting the transformation of India’s startup and innovation ecosystem, the Vice President credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for creating an environment that supports entrepreneurship and innovation like never before.
“My best wishes to you to create the next big innovation, the next model of sustainable development, and the next chapter in India’s rise as a global leader,” he added.
COVID-19 Vaccine As Symbol Of Indian Innovation
Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, Radhakrishnan recalled how the Prime Minister had called upon Indian scientists to develop an indigenous vaccine.
“Many doubted it. But India delivered one of the best vaccines for humanity,” he said, adding that while advanced Western economies focused on patents and profits, India ensured affordability and global access.
“How can a poor man afford a vaccine costing USD 7,500 per unit?” he asked, stressing that Indian innovation prioritises human welfare over commercial gains.
Infrastructure As Instrument Of Unity
The Vice President said that Indian innovations and infrastructure projects are now widely recognised across the world. He noted the Centre’s recent approval for the development and expansion of the Srinagar International Airport at a cost exceeding ₹1,600 crore.
Quoting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, he said tourism must expand without damaging the fragile ecosystem of Jammu and Kashmir.
He also described the Chenab Rail Bridge as a marvel of engineering.
“These projects are not just engineering feats; they are instruments of social harmony. When places are connected, people are connected. And when people are connected, hearts are connected,” he said.
Message To Youth: Stay Focused, Stay Away From Drugs
Radhakrishnan said such initiatives would create immense opportunities for youth, including those graduating at the convocation. He also highlighted the PM Special Scholarship Scheme for J&K students, calling it a powerful tool for aspiration and national integration.
Issuing a strong warning against drug abuse, the Vice President urged students to remain vigilant.
“Your parents depend on you for their future. Every religion considers narcotics a sin. Stay away from drugs and advise others to do the same,” he said.
He also cautioned against excessive use of social media, saying it should be used in moderation and not allowed to distract youth from their goals.
“Hamara Kashmir”
Concluding his address with an emotional appeal, Radhakrishnan said he wanted to leave students with three lines:
“Mera Kashmir nahi, tumhara Kashmir nahi — Hamara Kashmir.”
The remark drew applause, underlining his call for unity, shared responsibility, and collective progress for the region and the nation.
