Srinagar, July 11, 2025 – Leaders of the National Conference (NC) on Friday paid rich tributes to Begum Akbar Jehan, wife of party founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, on her 25th death anniversary.
NC president Farooq Abdullah, along with senior leaders, functionaries, and party workers, visited her mausoleum at Hazratbal to offer fateha and floral tributes. The gathering remembered her enduring contributions to Jammu and Kashmir’s socio-political landscape.
Akbar Jehan, a two-time Member of Parliament, represented Srinagar from 1977 to 1979 and Anantnag from 1984 to 1989. She passed away on July 11, 2000, at the age of 84.
The matriarch of the Abdullah family, she was the mother of Farooq Abdullah and grandmother of the current Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Her husband, Sheikh Abdullah, served as Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 1948 to 1953 before the title was changed to Chief Minister.
Party leaders recalled her legacy as a strong voice for women and social justice in the region.
