Leh (Ladakh), March 22, 2026 : Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has returned to Leh after his release from detention, expressing optimism and calling for constructive dialogue on issues concerning Ladakh.
Speaking after his arrival, Wangchuk said he felt a deep sense of positivity returning to the mountains after nearly six months. “After 170 days, coming back to these mountains and meeting people, I feel very good. I hope that a new sun will rise for the cause for which we are working,” he said.
He emphasized the need for a collaborative and peaceful approach moving forward, expressing hope that all stakeholders would create a conducive atmosphere for meaningful discussions. Wangchuk also thanked people across the country for their support during his detention and said he looks forward to engaging with communities in the region.
The activist had been lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail since September 26, 2025, after being detained under the National Security Act. His release came after the government revoked the detention order.
Wangchuk’s return is being seen as a significant moment in the ongoing discourse around Ladakh-related issues, with his call for dialogue signaling a possible shift towards engagement and resolution.
