Jammu, February 17, 2026 : The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday informed the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly that no proposal is under consideration to waive outstanding electricity usage charges or power bill arrears of small and marginal farmers in the Union Territory.
The information was conveyed in a written reply to a question raised by Gharu Ram. Responding on behalf of the government, the Minister In-Charge, Power Development Department (PDD) clarified that the administration does not intend to waive off electricity arrears.
The House was further informed that electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) are already supplying power to the agriculture sector at heavily subsidised tariff rates, which significantly reduce the financial burden on farmers.
The government stated that while support measures for the agriculture sector are in place through subsidies, blanket waiver of arrears is not being contemplated at present, keeping in view fiscal discipline and the financial health of the power sector.
