Srinagar, December 4, 2025 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to convene a meeting of political parties to clear apprehensions surrounding the proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the passing-out parade of the Army’s JAKLI Regiment, Abdullah said that doubts exist about the process and transparency of the SIR.
“There are apprehensions. It will be better if the Election Commission calls people like us and explains what SIR actually is. We have seen that while elections may not be stolen through machines, they are surely manipulated in other ways,” he said.
Delimitation Called Electoral Manipulation
Referring to the 2023 delimitation exercise in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah alleged that it was a manipulation of the electoral process for political gain.
“You created seven seats for political gains which benefited only one party or its allies. That is also a form of election manipulation. In the same context, people fear that SIR could also be misused,” he added.
Congratulates JAKLI Recruits
The Chief Minister also congratulated around 713 youth who took part in the passing-out parade and joined the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI).
“JAKLI shares a deep bond with Jammu and Kashmir as it guards the country’s borders. I congratulate the young soldiers and their families,” he said.
On Putin’s Visit & Indo-Russia Ties
Commenting on the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Abdullah said India and Russia share old and deep-rooted relations.
“Russia has stood by India during wars, conspiracies, and attacks by our neighbours — whether through arms supply or by using veto power in the UN Security Council. It is a good sign that the Russian President is visiting India,” he said.
He added that if strong Indo-Russian relations help another nation like Ukraine move toward peace, it should be welcomed.
“Our Prime Minister has a good relationship with President Putin. If that helps persuade Russia to choose peace and end the Ukraine war, it will be a success for the entire world,” Abdullah said.
On Sheikh Abdullah Anniversary & Statehood
Responding to a query about declaring a holiday on the birth anniversary of National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the Chief Minister said the elected government does not have the authority to declare holidays.
“I wish we had that power. That is why we demand restoration of statehood, so we can take both big and small decisions ourselves,” he said.
However, he added that respect for Sher-e-Kashmir does not depend on a holiday.
“Today, the best cadet received a sword named after Sher-e-Kashmir. His stature and contribution do not need a holiday for recognition,” Abdullah said.
The remarks have once again brought the issues of election transparency, democratic institutions, and statehood into sharp public focus.
