Jammu, February 17, 2026 : The Government of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday informed the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly that over 17.27 lakh kanals of state land have been encroached upon across the Union Territory, of which more than 14.29 lakh kanals have been retrieved so far.
The information was shared in a written reply by the Revenue Department to a question raised by Sham Lal Sharma during the ongoing Assembly session.

According to the data placed before the House:

Encroached land: 3,27,198.50 kanals

Retrieved land: 2,16,912.98 kanals

Encroached land: 14,00,049.66 kanals

Retrieved land: 12,12,287.44 kanals

Overall Status Across J&K
In total, 17,27,248.16 kanals of state land were found encroached across Jammu and Kashmir, while 14,29,200.42 kanals have been successfully recovered by the authorities to date.
The government stated that efforts to identify, retrieve, and safeguard state land are continuing, with the Revenue Department taking action in accordance with existing laws and procedures.
