Srinagar, January 23, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said efforts are underway to restore electricity supply across the Kashmir Valley, which has been severely affected by gusty winds and heavy snowfall.
According to the Chief Minister, the active power load has dropped to less than 100 MW, compared to the usual 1,700 MW, due to the outage of almost all 33 KV feeders, including those supplying emergency services.
“As per KPDCL, the active power load in the Valley is less than 100 MW against the usual 1700 MW, essentially due to the outage of almost all 33KV feeders,” Abdullah said in a post on X.
He said repair teams are on the job, but extensive tree fall on power lines and strong winds are hampering restoration work.
“Damage assessment is underway, but it will take some time due to prevailing weather conditions,” he added.
High-speed winds and snowfall uprooted trees, electricity poles, rooftops and snapped power lines across several areas, including Srinagar, causing damage to houses, structures and vehicles. Power supply was disrupted in large parts of the Valley.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said almost the entire electricity system had shut down due to bad weather.
“The scale of damage can be gauged from the fact that supply dropped from 1700 MW to just 100 MW. The department is working on immediate restoration,” he said.
Abdullah said the government’s top priority is the restoration of electricity, roads and water supply.
“Priority roads are being cleared first, followed by B and C category roads. One by one, all roads will be reopened,” he said.
Welcoming the season’s first snowfall in Srinagar, the Chief Minister said it was better late than never, noting its long-term benefits.
“Snowfall during Chila-i-Kalan benefits us in summer. Late snowfall melts quickly, but this snow will help us later,” he said.
On tourism, Abdullah expressed optimism, saying snowfall is expected to boost tourist arrivals.
“I’ve heard Gulmarg has received over two feet of snow. We hope more tourists will come and ski courses will run smoothly,” he added.
On pre-budget consultations, the Chief Minister said discussions with MLAs will be held on Friday.
“Suggestions from stakeholders including industry, horticulture, agriculture, tourism and higher education have been received and will be incorporated wherever possible,” he said.
