New Delhi | September 24, 2025 : The Election Commission of India on Wednesday announced that biennial polls to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir will be held on October 24, 2025.
These seats have been lying vacant since 2021 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir (with legislature) and Ladakh (without legislature).
Under the provisions of the J&K Reorganisation Act, the four sitting members of the Rajya Sabha from the erstwhile state were deemed to represent the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. However, their terms expired, and elections could not be held earlier due to the absence of a functional Legislative Assembly in J&K.
With the constitution of the J&K Assembly, the required electorate now exists, paving the way for the conduct of biennial elections.
Polling will take place on October 24, with the counting of votes scheduled the same evening, an hour after the conclusion of polling.
This election marks a significant step in the restoration of parliamentary representation for Jammu and Kashmir in the Upper House of Parliament.
