Jammu, March 31, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday expressed serious concern and surprise over the complete withdrawal of security at the National Conference (NC) headquarters in Srinagar, just weeks after an assassination attempt on party president Farooq Abdullah.
Addressing reporters outside the assembly, the Chief Minister termed the move “difficult to comprehend,” especially given that Farooq Abdullah frequently visits the party office two to three times a week.
Recent Assassination Attempt
The concern comes in the wake of a March 11 attack in Jammu, where:
- A 63-year-old accused opened fire at close range
- Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped unhurt
- The attacker was overpowered and arrested on the spot
- A revolver was recovered
Security Withdrawal Questioned
Omar Abdullah emphasized that:
- Security has been completely withdrawn, not merely reduced
- The timing—just days after the attack—raises serious questions
- Clarification from the administration is needed on the reason and compulsion behind the decision
Assembly Raises Alarm
The issue was also discussed in the House during a half-hour debate initiated by NC legislators. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather voiced concern and urged authorities to:
- Either declare Jammu & Kashmir as “risk-free”
- Or ensure adequate security for all sensitive locations
The NC headquarters, known as the ‘Nawai Subuh’ complex, remains a key political hub frequently visited by senior Leaders.
Other Remarks
On unrelated international reports involving Donald Trump, the Chief Minister declined to comment, stating the matter does not concern India.
