KARGIL, April 5, 2026 : Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk received a warm and enthusiastic welcome in Kargil on Sunday during his first visit after release from detention, where he strongly called for unity and equal constitutional rights for Ladakh.
First Visit After Release
This marked Wangchuk’s first visit to Kargil after his release on March 14, following nearly six months of detention under the National Security Act. His release came after the Centre revoked the detention grounds following a petition in the Supreme Court of India.
Strong Call for Unity
Addressing a large gathering, Wangchuk emphasized the importance of unity beyond regional, religious, or social divisions.
“What should unite us is humanity and a shared sense of being Indian… we must come closer, not drift apart.”
He stressed that Ladakh’s demands are not regional but collective, calling for democratic rights, constitutional safeguards, and control over local resources.
Support from KDA & LAB
Leaders from the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body (LAB)—which are spearheading the movement—joined the rally and reiterated demands for:
- Statehood for Ladakh
- Sixth Schedule status
They also urged early dialogue with the High-Powered Committee set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Leaders Demand Dialogue
- MP Haneefa Jan called Wangchuk’s release a “victory of truth” and urged the Centre to resume talks sincerely.
- LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjey claimed the release was due to legal pressure and warned against attempts to divide the movement.
- KDA leader Asgar Ali Karbalai stressed that dialogue must be genuine and outcome-oriented, not a delaying tactic.
Message of Unity Across Ladakh
Wangchuk highlighted the growing unity between Leh and Kargil, calling it a historic development that has strengthened the movement.
“For the first time, people from different parts of Ladakh came together… this spirit must be preserved.”
Movement to Continue
Leaders warned that delays or lack of concrete action could intensify the ongoing agitation, while reaffirming their commitment to peaceful and democratic protest.
