JAMMU, April 10, 2026 : Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Friday expressed shock over the presence of previously suspended or transferred officers still working in the Directorate of Mining office in Jammu, and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
“Shocked to See Suspended Officers Working”
Speaking to reporters, Choudhary said:
“I was shocked to see officers suspended by me still working at the Director Mining office Jammu. These employees were either suspended or transferred on serious allegations, but I found them working here.”
He further noted that both the Director and Joint Director were absent during his visit, reportedly attending a meeting called by the Chief Secretary.
Illegal Mining Concerns
Admitting lapses within the department, the Deputy CM said illegal mining activities are ongoing due to internal weaknesses.
“I admit that illegal mining is going on due to some officers… It seems these activities are being encouraged and patronized from within the department,” he stated.
Inquiry Ordered
Choudhary announced that a formal inquiry will be initiated into:
- Functioning of the Mining Department
- Presence of suspended/transferred officials
- Alleged internal support for illegal mining
Administrative Challenges Highlighted
He also pointed to governance challenges under the Union Territory framework, stating that some officials misuse the system, leading to irregularities and tarnishing the government’s image.
Describing the situation at the office, he remarked it had “become a fish market and a source of illegal mining.”
Conclusion
The Deputy CM’s remarks signal a stricter stance against administrative lapses and illegal mining, with a probe expected to fix accountability within the department.
