New Delhi, February 2, 2026 : Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said sustaining a 7–8 per cent economic growth rate remains the government’s top priority, as robust growth benefits all citizens and generates employment opportunities across sectors.
Interacting with college students from various regions after the presentation of the Union Budget 2026–27, the Finance Minister underlined that economic growth is the foundation for inclusive development. “Growth is the primary priority. We must sustain it at 7–8 per cent, the level expected of the world’s fastest-growing economy. Everything we do is aimed at maintaining that momentum,” she said.
Sitharaman noted that higher growth leads to job creation, increased workforce participation and enhanced productivity. She also highlighted the growing recognition of women’s contribution to the workforce, especially in semi-skilled roles, attributing it to their efficiency and precision. However, she expressed concern over the limited presence of women in leadership positions and boardrooms, stressing the need for greater representation to influence decision-making and inspire others.
The Finance Minister also spoke about the government’s continued policy support for the Orange Economy — encompassing Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics — describing it as a promising and creativity-driven sector with expanding opportunities, including its increasing relevance for television and digital media.
Explaining the budget-making process, Sitharaman said preparations typically begin in October or November with wide-ranging consultations involving industry bodies, economists, trade unions, states and public feedback through social media. These suggestions are then examined for feasibility, refined through inter-ministerial discussions and multiple reviews before the final budget speech is prepared.
She emphasised that while progress has been made on several fronts, sustained efforts are essential to ensure long-term growth, employment generation and inclusive economic development.
