WASHINGTON, November 27, 2025 : A shocking ambush just blocks from the White House left two National Guard members shot on Thursday, prompting a rapid surge of federal troops and a sweeping multi-agency investigation into what authorities describe as a “targeted attack”.
Shooter Opened Fire Without Warning
Executive Assistant DC Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said video footage shows the assailant “coming around the corner” before immediately opening fire on the troops stationed near a metro stop northwest of the White House.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed the attack was deliberate.
Confusion Over Troops’ Condition
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey initially stated the two Guard members had died, but later retracted the claim, saying his office was receiving “conflicting reports” on their condition.
Suspect Shot, In Custody
The suspect, who was also shot during the incident, sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement source speaking anonymously to the AP.
Authorities confirmed:
-
The shooter acted alone
-
At least one Guard member returned fire
-
Troops in the vicinity rushed in and held down the gunman after he was wounded
Massive Federal Response Ordered
In response to the attack, the Trump administration ordered 500 additional National Guard members to Washington.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said President Donald Trump personally directed the reinforcement.
Nearly 2,200 troops were already deployed across the city as part of an ongoing joint task force.
Witnesses Describe Chaos
Witnesses reported scenes of panic:
-
Stacy Walters heard two gunshots and saw people fleeing as law enforcement quickly flooded the streets.
-
Emma McDonald, exiting the metro, sheltered inside a cafe and later saw a Guard member being wheeled away with his head covered in blood.
Social media videos captured CPR being administered on the sidewalk strewn with shattered glass.
Heavy Security Presence
The area was sealed off with police tape as:
-
Secret Service
-
ATF agents
-
Additional National Guard units
-
At least one medical evacuation helicopter
arrived on the scene, adding to the high-alert atmosphere near the National Mall.
Political Leaders React
From Florida, former President Donald Trump reacted sharply on Truth Social, calling the shooter an “animal” who “will pay a very steep price.” He praised the National Guard, law enforcement, and assured them of his support.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking at Fort Campbell, urged prayers for the wounded troops and emphasised the dangers faced by soldiers in all capacities.
Context: Heightened Tensions Over Troop Deployment
The attack comes amid legal challenges and political scrutiny surrounding the extended deployment of National Guard personnel in Washington.
-
A federal judge recently ordered an end to the deployment but stayed the ruling for 21 days to allow the administration to respond.
-
More than 300 West Virginia National Guard members were deployed in August; many extended service voluntarily.
These troops have been patrolling neighbourhoods, transport hubs, checkpoints, and even assisting in public upkeep roles in the capital.
