Jammu, September 3, 2025 : Three people were rescued after being trapped under debris when an old house collapsed in Jammu city on Wednesday, following days of heavy rainfall across the region.
House Collapse in Pacca Danga
The incident occurred in Kali Jhani Mohalla of Pacca Danga, one of the oldest and most densely populated neighbourhoods in Jammu. Officials said the continuous downpour had weakened the structure, causing it to give way in the morning hours.
Police teams, assisted by local residents, swiftly launched a rescue operation. After nearly an hour-long effort, three persons were safely evacuated from the rubble. Their condition is said to be stable.
MLA Calls for Action
Local MLA Yudhvir Sethi, who rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue, expressed relief that lives were saved but stressed the urgent need for preventive action.
“Many houses in this part of the city are decades old and have become unsafe due to continuous rains. I have asked the Deputy Commissioner to initiate a survey and dismantle dilapidated structures before they turn into tragedies,” Sethi said.
Second Collapse in Old City
In a separate incident, another building collapsed in Jammu’s old city area later in the day. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, though the incident has heightened concerns over the safety of other vulnerable buildings in rain-hit zones.
Rising Risk Due to Incessant Rains
Officials of the municipal corporation said that incessant rains since August 26 have left several old houses and commercial structures at risk of collapse. Cracks have appeared in multiple buildings in the city’s heritage quarters, where narrow lanes and congested housing make rescue operations more challenging.
Police have urged residents of such structures to vacate immediately and shift to safer locations until the weather stabilises.
Broader Concern
The incidents come at a time when Jammu is already grappling with widespread disruptions due to heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides. Multiple roads remain blocked, while the River Tawi and Chenab are flowing above danger mark, putting thousands of families in low-lying areas on high alert.
