UDHAMPUR, August 2,2025 : An under-construction footbridge, intended to connect the Narsoo and Swena blocks in Udhampur district, collapsed amid heavy rains before it could be completed. The bridge, being built at a cost of ₹1.58 crore, had been under construction for over a year.
The incident has sparked outrage among local representatives and residents. Subhash Chander, District Development Council (DDC) member from Narsoo, called for a thorough investigation and swift reconstruction of the bridge.
“It was a long-pending demand of the people. As soon as construction started, there was a sense of joy. But this collapse has caused huge disappointment. We’ve informed the local MLA and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. An inquiry must determine whether there was a technical fault, and those responsible should be held accountable,” Chander said.
Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Rajinder Singh confirmed that the bridge was in its final stages of construction when it gave way due to rainfall.
“The bridge between Dharmsthal and Narda collapsed during the launch phase, likely due to improper binding. It had been under construction for the past 1.5 years,” Singh stated.
Following the incident, the Deputy Commissioner ordered an inquiry committee headed by the ADDC. Preliminary findings indicate lapses in monitoring and supervision.
“We visited the site, spoke with locals, and reviewed departmental inputs. There were evident gaps in oversight. The final report will be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner with recommendations for corrective action,” Singh added.
The investigation is ongoing.
