Jammu, Sept 25 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that the National Conference (NC) will take a final call on who will contest the upcoming elections to the four vacant Rajya Sabha seats from the Union Territory.
The Election Commission announced on Wednesday that the biennial elections will be held on October 24, filling seats that have been vacant since 2021.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to flood-hit Mahore sub-division in Reasi, Abdullah clarified:
“There are four seats. We will decide how many seats we will fight and how many seats we will leave for others to fight.”
On speculations that NC president Farooq Abdullah and former minister Sajjad Kitchloo could be in the fray, the Chief Minister said,
“You can name anyone you want but it is the party which will decide. As far as I know, there has been no such talk within the National Conference.”
Switching focus to the recent flash floods in J&K, Abdullah said the calamity had caused severe damage to both public and private property.
“In some areas, entire mountainsides have come down, washing away homes and agricultural land. I have met victims and assured them that the government will extend all possible help,” he added.
