Srinagar, October 3, 2025 : The attendance of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly session will depend on whether the court grants him permission, said Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, the Speaker clarified, “It depends on whether he gets permission or not. For that, he would need to approach the court. If the government grants permission, he should attend—it would be good.”
Malik has been under detention since last month under the Public Safety Act (PSA) by the J&K administration.
Regarding the show-cause notice served to PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, Rather said his reply is under examination. “He had issued a misleading statement claiming that the Assembly secretariat endorsed the PSA. The Assembly has no role in approving PSA; it is imposed by the district magistrate,” the Speaker clarified.
Para had earlier posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Shameful surrender. Assembly Secretariat endorsing PSA against an elected MLA is a direct assault on democracy. J&K CM @OmarAbdullah must act. Today it’s Mehraj, tomorrow it could be you.”
The Speaker further added that the Assembly is in the process of framing a provisional calendar for the upcoming session. “It would likely have 5-7 sittings, depending on government business. We will issue the provisional calendar once we receive all details from the government,” he said.
