Srinagar, January 16, 2026 : Fresh snowfall was reported across several higher reaches of Kashmir on Friday afternoon, intensifying winter conditions and adding to the seasonal snow cover in alpine areas.
According to officials, the Gurez Plains received around two inches of fresh snowfall, while Drass recorded nearly one inch. The strategic Zojila Pass also witnessed about two inches of snow, impacting movement along the vital mountain corridor.
Sadhna Pass in north Kashmir received between two and three inches of snowfall, further strengthening the winter snowpack in the upper reaches of the region. Light to moderate snowfall was also reported from popular tourist destinations. Gulmarg recorded around one centimetre of fresh snow, while Doothpathri and Sonamarg experienced light snowfall during the day.
Weather officials said the snowfall remained largely confined to higher elevations, with lower areas of the Kashmir Valley witnessing cloudy skies and cold conditions. Night temperatures are expected to drop further in snow-covered regions.
Authorities have advised travellers, transporters and residents of higher reaches to exercise caution, particularly while crossing mountain passes, as fresh snowfall may lead to slippery and hazardous road conditions.
Meteorological officials indicated that further weather activity is likely in the coming days, with the possibility of additional snowfall over higher reaches and even some plains as western disturbances continue to influence the region.
