Jammu, January 26, 2026 : A fresh encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir late Sunday night, officials said.
This is the third gunfight in the Chatroo belt within a week, as the Army and police continue operations to track down three Pakistani terrorists linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad, despite heavy snowfall in the area.
The latest exchange of fire began around 10:20 pm when a joint Army–Police search party came under fire during an operation in the Janseer–Kandiwar forest area. Security forces retaliated, triggering intermittent gunfire, officials said.
Operations in the snow-bound Chatroo region have been intensified following the January 18 encounter in Sonnar village near Mandral–Singhpora, in which one paratrooper was killed and seven others injured.
The terrorists managed to escape during earlier encounters, taking advantage of dense forests and difficult terrain, and were again intercepted on January 22, a few kilometres away. However, they slipped away once more.
Security forces have continued the operation relentlessly, even as the region received over two feet of fresh snowfall on Friday.
