Jammu, January 30, 2026 : Security forces on Friday intensified the ongoing anti-terror operation in the snowbound Chatroo belt of Kishtwar district to track down and neutralise a group of three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists believed to be hiding in the dense forest area, officials said.
To prevent misuse of communication networks during the operation, mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended within a six-kilometre radius covering Singhpora, Chingam and Chatroo. Officials said the restriction is aimed at stopping anti-national elements from exploiting high-speed data services.
The operation, launched on January 18, witnessed a fierce gunbattle in the Sonnar forest near Mandral-Singhpora, resulting in the martyrdom of a paratrooper and injuries to seven soldiers. Despite suffering casualties, the terrorists managed to flee, taking advantage of thick vegetation, heavy snowfall and difficult terrain.
Subsequent encounters were reported at Mali Dana top on January 22 and Janseer-Kandiwar on January 25. However, the terrorists again evaded the security cordon and slipped deeper into the forested region. Security forces have continued their relentless search despite more than two feet of snowfall and harsh weather conditions.
According to officials, the suspension of mobile internet services, first imposed on January 23, has been extended till 11:59 pm on January 30. The order was issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, and authorised by the Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone.
The decision was taken in the interest of public safety to prevent any deterioration of law and order and to ensure the smooth conduct of the counter-terror operation.
Meanwhile, security forces have also launched a search operation in Pajja Morh, Nabana Top and adjoining areas of the Surankote region in Poonch district following inputs about the presence of two suspected persons. No contact has been established so far, and the operation is ongoing, officials said.
