Jammu, February 5, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced that the government has approved the allotment of land to landless families rendered homeless due to natural calamities in 2025.
In a written reply to a question raised by BJP MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia in the Legislative Assembly, the chief minister said the Council of Ministers has approved the allotment of five marlas of state land on a 40-year lease basis to each affected landless family. The decision was formalised through a government order issued on January 2.
Abdullah said the land will be allotted exclusively for residential purposes and no premium will be charged from the beneficiaries.
“The beneficiaries will only be required to pay an annual ground rent of ₹10 per marla for a period of 40 years, which can be extended further as per rules after approval of the competent authority,” he said.
The chief minister said the allotment will be governed by the conditions laid down in the government order and is aimed at rehabilitating families affected by floods, flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts and earthquakes across the Union Territory.
He informed the House that over 6,400 families affected by flash floods and landslides in Udhampur district have already been provided financial assistance amounting to more than ₹23.49 crore.
“A total of 6,449 affected families across Udhampur, Chenani, Ramnagar and Latti-Marothi tehsils were provided compensation as per prescribed norms,” Abdullah said.
Providing a tehsil-wise breakup, he said 2,666 families in Udhampur tehsil were sanctioned around ₹9.32 crore, while 1,208 families in Chenani tehsil received over ₹5 crore.
In Ramnagar tehsil, 2,298 affected families were sanctioned ₹7.86 crore, and 277 families in Latti-Marothi tehsil were provided over ₹1 crore as relief.
The chief minister said the damage assessment was carried out by field teams and eligible cases were verified in accordance with State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms. He added that compensation was sanctioned and disbursed directly to beneficiaries through prescribed financial mechanisms.
He further stated that the government is committed to the long-term rehabilitation of families rendered landless due to natural disasters and is providing state land on lease for residential purposes under approved norms.
