Jammu, February 6, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday announced a significant expansion in medical education, unveiling the addition of 548 new medical seats across the Union Territory.
Presenting the Budget in the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said the move is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the healthcare system and build long-term human resource capacity.
The newly added seats include 340 MBBS seats, 128 postgraduate (PG) seats, 34 postgraduate Ayurveda seats, and 46 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats, substantially enhancing opportunities for aspiring medical professionals in J&K.
In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure, Abdullah also confirmed that AIIMS Kashmir is scheduled to become operational by June 2026, marking a milestone in providing world-class medical education and advanced healthcare services in the region.
He said these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare and reducing the need for patients and students to travel outside the Union Territory.
