Jammu, February 13, 2026 : Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon passed away on Friday, prompting the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to observe a two-minute silence in his honour.
The news of his demise was informed to the House by NC spokesperson and legislator Tanveer Sadiq during the ongoing Budget session in Jammu. Members across party lines expressed profound grief and paid rich tributes to the veteran leader’s political and public service legacy.
Akhoon, who hailed from Sangra village in Kargil, was a prominent political figure from the Ladakh region and served as Food Minister in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Known for his grassroots connect and administrative acumen, he was regarded as a strong voice for the people of Kargil and other remote, high-altitude areas.
Legislators described him as a seasoned and accessible leader who consistently worked for public welfare and played an important role in articulating the concerns of marginalized communities. Many members highlighted his contribution to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring representation for Ladakh within the broader political framework of the former state.
The Assembly witnessed solemn scenes as members stood in silence to honour his memory and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Akhoon’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Kargil’s political history, where he remained one of the most recognisable and influential leaders for decades.
Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into two Union Territories — J&K and Ladakh — in August 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370. Elections to the J&K Legislative Assembly were held in 2024, and the NC government led by Omar Abdullah assumed office in October 2024. Despite the bifurcation, the NC continues to maintain its presence in the Ladakh region, particularly in Kargil.
