GULMARG, February 23, 2026 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday said that sports are a powerful reflection of Jammu and Kashmir’s identity, national unity and collective spirit, as he addressed the opening ceremony of the sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG-2026) in Gulmarg.

Addressing athletes, officials and sports enthusiasts in North Kashmir, the Lieutenant Governor said sports connect every citizen, inspire discipline and help in building strong character, especially among the youth.

“This is not merely an event. The Khelo India Winter Games reflect Jammu and Kashmir’s identity in sports, the spirit of national unity and the creative power of sports for our youth,” LG Sinha said.

He noted that it was a happy coincidence that the Winter Wanchit Festival concluded on February 22, followed immediately by the commencement of the Khelo India Winter Games, symbolising continuity in cultural and sporting celebration in the Union Territory.

KIWG Emerging as a National Festival

Welcoming athletes, coaches, managers and sports lovers from across the country, LG Sinha extended his best wishes to all participants and described the Games as steadily evolving into a national sports festival.

“This is not just a competition. With everyone’s support, it is gradually transforming into a national festival,” he remarked.

Boost to Sports Infrastructure in J&K

Highlighting the progress made in the sports sector over the past few years, the Lieutenant Governor said Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed remarkable development with strong support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

He said the expansion of Khelo India Centres across the region has significantly strengthened sports infrastructure and provided new opportunities to young talent.

The LG credited the youth of Jammu and Kashmir for their dedication, discipline and sporting excellence, while also appreciating the tireless efforts of officials involved in organising the Winter Games successfully.

Warm Welcome to Athletes

Extending a warm welcome to skiers and athletes from different parts of the country, LG Sinha said they were not just competitors but honoured guests of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The people of J&K welcome you wholeheartedly. We hope you experience not only competition here but also the tradition, culture and dignity of this paradise on earth,” he said.

Gulmarg Slopes Symbolise Courage and Confidence

Referring to the iconic ski slopes of Gulmarg, the Lieutenant Governor said the competitions being held there symbolise sporting excellence, courage, determination and self-confidence of the athletes.

He expressed confidence that the Khelo India Winter Games would continue to inspire young sportspersons and further strengthen the bond of unity through sports.
