Jammu, March 5,2026 : Tariq Hameed Qarra on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of remaining silent on developments related to Iran and asserting that 2026 could prove to be a “watershed year” for the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Addressing an interactive session of the Indian National Congress in Jammu, Qarra expressed disappointment that the prime minister had not commented on the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei following recent military developments in the region.

Criticising the Centre’s response to global developments, Qarra alleged that the government had failed to present a clear stance on the issue. “We have been reminding you to clarify your position on Iran, but you did not even pay attention to it,” he said.

He claimed that the ongoing turmoil in West Asia could reshape global politics and asserted that the political situation could become increasingly difficult for the current government. According to Qarra, 2026 may emerge as a decisive year for the ruling establishment.

Referring to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Qarra said Gandhi’s remarks about the prime minister’s “fear” were not misplaced and alleged that the government was gradually losing its grip.

Drawing parallels with India’s pre-Independence era, he said the Congress had historically taken responsibility for safeguarding the country’s democratic values. He cited the legacy of leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, saying India had once maintained an independent foreign policy and strong ties with nations across the world, including Iran.

Qarra also recalled that Iran had supported India at key moments, including discussions related to Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations, and had provided oil to India at concessional rates during difficult economic periods.

He further criticised a recent trade agreement, claiming it could adversely affect farmers, labourers and those associated with agriculture and allied sectors. According to him, cheaper imports of products such as fruits, dry fruits, milk items and cotton could harm local producers.

Alleging that national interests were being compromised for corporate interests, Qarra accused the government of favouring industrialist Gautam Adani.

Announcing political action, Qarra said the Congress would organise protests at district headquarters across Jammu and Kashmir on March 9 to highlight concerns over the trade deal and other issues raised by the party.
