New Delhi, March 23, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India on Monday disposed of a plea filed by Gitanjali J Angmo challenging the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA).

A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and P B Varale observed that since the Centre had already revoked Wangchuk’s detention on March 14, there was “nothing left” to adjudicate in the matter.

Earlier, the apex court had sought clarity from the Centre on whether it could reconsider Wangchuk’s detention, particularly in light of his health condition.

The Centre informed the court that the detention order had been withdrawn with immediate effect, nearly six months after Wangchuk was taken into custody on September 26, 2025.

Wangchuk’s detention followed protests in Leh over demands for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The protests had turned violent, resulting in four deaths and injuries to over 45 people, including police personnel.

With the revocation of the detention order, the Supreme Court concluded the proceedings, effectively closing the case.
