Jammu, March 28, 2026 : Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Javed Ahmad Rana on Saturday informed the Assembly that multiple measures have been implemented to mitigate human–wild boar conflict in and around Dachigam National Park, including areas like New Theed.
The statement came in response to a Calling Attention Motion moved by Salman Ali Sagar on behalf of Ali Mohammad Sagar.
Key Measures Taken
- 🧱 Construction of cement concrete toe wall along 3 km fencing to stop burrowing by wild boars
- 🧹 Regular anti-plastic & sanitation drives to reduce attractants
- 📞 24×7 Dachigam Control Room for quick response
- 🚶 Continuous patrolling in fringe villages
- 🔊 Use of noise guns & firecrackers to deter animals
No Human Casualties
The Minister stated that due to these interventions, no human injuries have been reported in affected areas so far.
Awareness & Community Outreach
- 📢 Advisories issued to farmers and local residents
- 🤝 Awareness programmes conducted in nearby villages
Wild Boar: An Invasive Species
The wild boar (Sus scrofa) was described as an alien invasive species in Kashmir, introduced during the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh for hunting purposes.
Hangul Population Shows Growth
Despite concerns, the Minister noted a steady rise in the population of the endangered Hangul:
- 📈 183 (2015) → 214 (2017) → 237 (2019) → 261 (2021) → 289 (2023) → 323 (2025)
👉 This indicates that increasing wild boar presence has not adversely impacted Hangul conservation efforts in Dachigam.
Conclusion
The government reaffirmed its commitment to balancing wildlife conservation with human safety, ensuring effective conflict mitigation in sensitive ecological zones.
