Jammu, March 31, 2026 : The Jammu & Kashmir government is intensifying efforts to upgrade government schools with improved infrastructure and modern learning facilities, Education Minister Sakeena Itoo said on Tuesday.
Replying to a question by MLA Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh in the Assembly, the Minister stated that the education system is being aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), focusing on digital literacy, multidisciplinary learning, and vocational education.
Key Reforms in School Education
- Introduction of Computer Science, Information Practices, and IT as separate subjects at Higher Secondary level (Classes 11–12)
- Implementation of 15 vocational/skill-based trades in High and Higher Secondary schools
- Gradual rollout of digital literacy and general studies components across school levels
AI & Future-Ready Learning
The Minister revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject is under active consideration, in line with NEP’s vision of future-ready education.
Focus on 21st Century Skills
In accordance with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, the government is embedding:
- Critical thinking
- Creativity & communication
- Collaboration
- Problem-solving
- Experiential learning
These skills are being integrated through curriculum rationalization, competency-based assessments, and modern teaching methods.
Teacher Training & Holistic Approach
Sakeena Itoo emphasized that teachers are being trained and oriented to effectively deliver these changes, ensuring students gain practical and relevant skills.
At Secondary and Senior Secondary levels, Digital Literacy and Skill Education are also offered as dedicated elective subjects, alongside their integration across all disciplines.
