JAMMU, April 5, 2026 : The government of Jammu and Kashmir has identified 256 illegal occupants along the flood plains of the Tawi River in the Nikki Tawi area of Jammu, with encroachments spread over 328 kanals and 15 marlas of prime land.

‘Oxygen Chamber’ Under Threat

Often referred to as the “oxygen chamber” of Jammu due to its rich green cover, Nikki Tawi—spanning over 5,000 kanals—is increasingly facing pressure from illegal constructions and encroachments.

Details Submitted to Tribunal

Responding to a query by BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah informed the Assembly that the details of encroachments have been submitted before the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The matter is currently under consideration and is scheduled for hearing on April 24, 2026, in New Delhi.

Encroachments Not in Revenue Records

According to official records submitted by the Deputy Commissioner, the identified occupants are present on-site under certain khasra numbers, but their entries are not recorded in revenue records, indicating unauthorized occupation.

Flood Impact Highlights Risk

The government also highlighted the environmental and safety risks, noting that during recent flash floods:

  • 17 houses were completely washed away
  • No loss of human life was reported

Further Action Expected

Authorities stated that the issue will be addressed in line with directions from the National Green Tribunal, indicating possible action against illegal encroachments.
