JAMMU, April 6, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday supported the magisterial probe ordered by the Lieutenant Governor into the controversial Ganderbal encounter, stressing the need for a swift and time-bound investigation.

Avoids Judicial vs Magisterial Debate

Responding to questions, Abdullah declined to engage in the debate over judicial versus magisterial inquiry, emphasizing urgency over procedure.

“I believe the inquiry should be conducted without wasting time… the truth should come before the public.”

Supports LG’s Decision

Endorsing the approach, he said the Lieutenant Governor’s decision for a magisterial probe is appropriate, adding that it allows for a quicker investigation process.

Encounter Under Scrutiny

The encounter in the Arhama forests (March 31) involved the killing of Rashid Ahmad Mughal, whom the Army claimed was a terrorist.
However, the family has denied any terror links, calling the encounter fake and demanding justice and return of the body.

Delay Concerns in Judicial Probes

The Chief Minister highlighted practical challenges in judicial inquiries:

  • Difficulty in appointing sitting judges
  • Restrictions by the Supreme Court of India
  • Delays even in appointing retired judges

Remarks on Global Situation

On international developments, Abdullah expressed concern over ongoing tensions and war-like situations, urging restraint and dignity in public communication by global leaders.

“We all hope that a ceasefire is announced soon… the situation should stabilise.”

Focus on Truth & Transparency

Reiterating his stance, Abdullah stressed that the priority remains uncovering facts quickly and transparently, ensuring justice and maintaining public trust.
