SRINAGAR, April 9, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the United States must exert control over Israel to ensure the success of the ongoing ceasefire with Iran.
“Ceasefire at Risk Without Restraint”
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah expressed concern over continued military actions, particularly in Lebanon, stating that such developments could derail peace efforts.
“The US should exert some control over Israel. With indiscriminate bombing and loss of innocent lives, how can a ceasefire possibly hold?” he said.
He warned that if the ceasefire collapses, responsibility would lie with Israel’s actions.
Remarks on US Leadership
Abdullah also took a sharp swipe at US President Donald Trump, criticizing his shifting statements and tone.
“He says one thing in the morning, another in the afternoon and something else in the evening. The language is unbecoming of a US President,” Abdullah remarked.
Questions Over War Outcomes
Raising broader concerns, Abdullah questioned the purpose and achievements of the conflict.
Referring to the Strait of Hormuz, he noted that it was already open before the war.
“So, what exactly has been achieved?” he asked, adding that Iran may now impose a toll for passage through the route.
On Pakistan’s Role
Acknowledging diplomatic developments, Abdullah said Pakistan played a role that others could not in facilitating talks.
“I won’t debate success or failure, but we must accept that Pakistan did what others couldn’t,” he said.
He further added that India’s close ties with Israel may have limited its ability to act as a mediator, despite having good relations with both the US and Iran.
Call for Sustainable Peace
Abdullah urged the US to create conditions conducive to lasting peace, emphasizing that sustained dialogue and restraint are essential to prevent further escalation.
Conclusion
The Chief Minister’s remarks highlight ongoing geopolitical tensions and underline the fragile nature of the ceasefire, stressing the need for balanced diplomacy and responsible global leadership.
