SRINAGAR, May 4, 2026 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday inaugurated the prestigious All India Inter-University Wushu Championship at the University of Kashmir, urging athletes to become ambassadors of the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan and inspire youth to reject drugs in favour of sports and positive lifestyles.
Addressing the inaugural function, the Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to fostering a strong sporting culture across higher educational institutions, ensuring equal opportunities for students to lead active and healthy lives.
Highlighting the broader significance of the event, he described the championship as more than just a sporting competition—calling it a celebration of unity under the vision of Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat. He emphasized that such platforms strengthen national integration, discipline, and excellence while promoting cultural exchange among youth from diverse backgrounds.
“This championship is not only about competition but about building friendships, breaking barriers, and reinforcing the spirit of one united India,” he said, encouraging participants to carry forward the values of sportsmanship and resilience.
The Lieutenant Governor also underscored the discipline of Wushu as a reflection of the strength and determination of India’s youth. He encouraged athletes to actively participate in spreading awareness against substance abuse by creating short videos and sharing them on social media, reinforcing their role as influencers for positive change.
The championship has witnessed participation from over 150 universities and more than 1,000 athletes from across the country, featuring both men’s and women’s competitions. Organized under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities, the six-day event will showcase multiple categories and bouts in Wushu, a martial art known for its agility, precision, and strength.
The inaugural event was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, Commissioner Secretary Youth Services & Sports Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Commissioner Secretary Higher Education Ram Niwas Sharma, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, along with senior university officials, sports personalities, and enthusiasts.
The championship not only highlights India’s growing sports culture at the university level but also serves as a powerful platform to channel youth energy towards discipline, unity, and nation-building.
