JAMMU, May 4, 2026 : In a decisive move against unauthorized constructions, the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) carried out a major anti-encroachment drive on the outskirts of Jammu city, demolishing more than 15 illegal structures along the Ring Road corridor.
Officials stated that the action followed due legal procedures, with notices served to violators well in advance, allowing them sufficient time to comply. The demolished structures had been erected without obtaining mandatory permissions and were found to be in clear violation of land use norms and building regulations.
According to the JDA, several of these constructions posed serious safety risks. Preliminary assessments revealed that some structures were either structurally unsafe or had encroached upon critical zones, posing potential danger to nearby residential and commercial areas.
The demolition drive was executed by the Enforcement Wing of the JDA, with support from local administration and law enforcement agencies, ensuring a smooth and incident-free operation.
Reaffirming its commitment to planned urban development, the JDA urged citizens to strictly adhere to building norms and secure necessary approvals before undertaking any construction. Officials emphasized that illegal structures not only violate laws but also disrupt systematic urban growth and compromise public safety.
Meanwhile, some residents alleged that certain illegal constructions had been allowed to come up over the past two years due to alleged lapses and corruption, claiming that no strict action has been taken against erring officials.
Earlier, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had informed the Assembly that over 16,000 kanals of JDA land remains under encroachment, highlighting the масштаб of the issue and the need for sustained enforcement.
Authorities have indicated that similar anti-encroachment drives will continue in the coming months as part of a broader effort to reclaim public land and ensure regulated development in Jammu.
