Jammu, May 14, 2026: The political controversy surrounding the allocation of chairmanships in various House Committees of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly intensified on Thursday after Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party may consider boycotting the committees over what it termed as “unfair and biased” distribution of positions.
Speaking to media persons, the senior BJP leader said the party would soon convene an internal meeting to decide its future course of action regarding participation in the Assembly committees.
“We will decide whether to stay away from the proceedings of the committees,” Sharma stated while expressing strong dissatisfaction over the allocation pattern adopted by the Assembly leadership.
The Leader of Opposition alleged that the distribution of committee chairmanships heavily favoured the ruling alliance led by the National Conference and its allies, while giving minimal representation to the opposition despite the BJP holding a substantial number of seats in the Assembly.
Sunil Sharma further accused the Assembly Speaker of acting in a partisan manner and violating the democratic principle of proportional representation while constituting the House Committees.
“The Assembly is being converted into the headquarters of the National Conference. The voice of the opposition is being suppressed so that the failures and blunders of the incompetent government do not come before the public,” he alleged.
The BJP leader said the opposition’s negligible representation in the chairmanship of committees amounted to an insult to the democratic mandate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Questioning the allocation formula, Sharma said the ruling alliance, which has 54 legislators in the Assembly, was given eight committee chairmanships, while the BJP, with 29 MLAs, received only one chairmanship.
“Those trying to justify this decision should first understand and read the principle of proportional representation instead of twisting facts according to their political convenience,” he remarked.
The controversy has triggered sharp political debate within Jammu and Kashmir’s political circles, with opposition parties accusing the ruling alliance of monopolising legislative institutions and limiting the role of opposition voices within Assembly functioning.
The BJP is expected to hold consultations in the coming days before formally announcing its stand on participation or possible boycott of the House Committees.
