Srinagar, May 31, 2026 : In a significant administrative decision, the Central Government has relaxed the mandatory cooling-off period for Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V.K. Birdi, clearing the path for his immediate consideration for a fresh deputation to a Central Government assignment.
The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) seeking exemption from the standard cooling-off requirement applicable to officers returning from central deputation.
Exemption From Mandatory Cooling-Off Period
Under existing deputation rules, officers who return to their parent cadre after serving on Central Government assignments are generally required to complete a three-year cooling-off period before becoming eligible for another deputation.
V.K. Birdi, a 2003-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, had returned to Jammu and Kashmir in September 2023 after serving with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and formally rejoined the AGMUT cadre in October 2023.
Following his return, he assumed charge as IGP Kashmir, overseeing law enforcement, security coordination, anti-terror operations, and policing across the Kashmir Valley.
As per the existing norms, Birdi’s cooling-off tenure was scheduled to conclude in October 2026. However, with the latest ACC approval, the Centre has waived the remaining period, making him immediately eligible for a fresh assignment under the Government of India.
Strong Indications Of Major Central Posting
Although no official announcement has yet been made regarding Birdi’s next assignment, the exemption is being viewed in administrative circles as a strong indication that the senior IPS officer may soon be entrusted with an important role at the national level.
The decision reflects the Centre’s confidence in Birdi’s experience and operational capabilities, particularly given his extensive background in security management and counter-insurgency operations.
Extensive Experience In Security And Policing
Over the course of his distinguished career, V.K. Birdi has held several key positions in both Jammu and Kashmir and Central security organisations. His tenure with the CRPF and subsequent leadership as IGP Kashmir have been marked by involvement in major security operations, strategic planning, and coordination among multiple security agencies.
He is regarded as one of the senior-most and most experienced IPS officers currently serving in the Union Territory.
Administrative Significance
The relaxation of deputation norms is a rare administrative measure and is generally exercised in cases where the services of an officer are considered necessary for critical assignments at the national level.
The move is expected to trigger discussions regarding Birdi’s potential future role within the Central Government’s security and administrative framework, though official details are awaited.
