Srinagar,  June 2, 2026 : People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday urged political parties and civil society groups across the Union Territory to come together for a united outreach to the Central Government, advocating the resumption of meaningful dialogue on issues concerning the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the protection of their constitutional rights.

In separate letters addressed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, political leaders, and representatives of various social and community organizations, Mehbooba emphasized the need for a collective political initiative that transcends party lines and focuses on the larger interests of the people.

Referring to recent developments in neighboring Ladakh, she said the progress achieved by the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance through sustained engagement with the Centre demonstrates that dialogue remains the most effective path to resolving longstanding issues.

Highlighting what she described as growing public despair and disillusionment, Mehbooba stated that Jammu and Kashmir is once again at a critical juncture in its history and requires a broad-based consensus among all stakeholders.

“Jammu and Kashmir finds itself yet again at a crossroads in its history where the pervasive feeling of despair and disillusionment has gripped the state. It necessitates a broad consensus above and across party and partisan lines to pull J-K out of the current debilitating stalemate,” she said.

The PDP chief stressed that restoring the dignity, security, and constitutional rights of the people requires constructive engagement with the Government of India. She called for a united approach towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging them to initiate a sustained and meaningful dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

In her communication to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba revealed that she had earlier sought an appointment with him, but due to his busy schedule, a meeting could not materialize.

“Time is running out and we cannot afford to delay things any further,” she wrote, while urging the Chief Minister to convene an official meeting of all political parties and stakeholders to build consensus before formally approaching the Centre.

She emphasized that political differences and ideological disagreements should be set aside in the larger interest of the people.

“We have to keep our disagreements and contrarian views on the back-burner to unite for the common good and collective welfare. This cannot become a matter of appropriating political credit or point scoring,” she said.

Mehbooba argued that divisions among regional political parties have often weakened Jammu and Kashmir’s collective voice, especially in the post-2019 political landscape. She maintained that a reasonable consensus among stakeholders is essential to effectively represent the aspirations and concerns of the people.

Drawing parallels with Ladakh’s experience, she remarked, “If Ladakh could do it, so can we.”

The former Chief Minister also underlined that the success of any such political platform would depend significantly on the support and leadership of the Chief Minister.

Besides Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba addressed letters to several prominent political and civil society leaders, including Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, People’s Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone, MP Engineer Rashid, AAP leader Mehraj Malik, PDF Chairman Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, J&K National Panthers Party President Harsh Dev Singh, Shiv Sena (J&K) President Manish Sahni, Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti President Sanjay Tickoo, and Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee Chairman Jaspal Singh.

The appeal marks a renewed push by Mehbooba Mufti for political unity and dialogue, positioning consensus-building and engagement with the Centre as key elements in addressing the concerns and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
