Jammu,  June 15, 2026 : In a significant move aimed at improving water distribution oversight and ensuring quality standards, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has directed all private water filling stations operating across the Jammu Division to register themselves with the concerned authorities within 10 days.

The directive was issued by Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology, Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, who emphasized the need to create a credible and comprehensive database of private water suppliers to enhance transparency, accountability, and service delivery.

Focus on Quality Control and Accountability

According to officials, the registration drive is intended to establish a reliable registry of private water filling stations and strengthen monitoring mechanisms related to potable water distribution across the region.

The initiative is expected to improve regulatory oversight, ensure adherence to prescribed quality standards, and streamline water supply operations, particularly during periods of increased demand caused by summer conditions and water shortages.

The minister noted that maintaining an updated database of water filling facilities would enable authorities to monitor their operations more effectively and safeguard public interests.

Review Meeting on Summer and Monsoon Preparedness

The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting chaired by Rana with senior officers of the Jal Shakti Department to assess ongoing measures aimed at addressing summer water requirements and preparing for the upcoming monsoon season.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed:

• Status of drinking water supply across Jammu Division.
• Flood management preparedness.
• Emergency response mechanisms.
• Infrastructure readiness for monsoon-related challenges.
• Measures to address water scarcity and heatwave conditions.

Officials briefed the minister on various initiatives being implemented to ensure uninterrupted water supply and strengthen the department’s preparedness for any emergency situation.

Rainwater Harvesting Declared a Priority

Highlighting growing concerns over declining groundwater levels and changing rainfall patterns, Rana stressed that rainwater harvesting must become a central component of water resource planning in Jammu and Kashmir.

He called for a transformative approach to water conservation and directed strict enforcement of regulations requiring rainwater harvesting systems in all newly constructed government buildings.

The minister said sustainable water management would be critical in addressing long-term challenges posed by climate variability and increasing demand for water resources.

Monitoring Groundwater Levels

Rana also instructed officials to intensify monitoring of groundwater levels across all districts in coordination with the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).

He emphasized the importance of data-driven planning and timely corrective measures based on scientific assessments and groundwater monitoring reports.

According to the minister, regular evaluation of groundwater reserves is essential for sustainable resource management and for mitigating future water stress situations.

Immediate Restoration of Water Infrastructure

To improve public access to drinking water, the minister directed officials to ensure that all repairable hand pumps across Jammu Division are restored without delay.

He also ordered the revival of defunct borewells and called for proactive measures to maintain and strengthen water supply infrastructure in vulnerable areas.

Strengthening Flood Protection Measures

With the monsoon season approaching, Rana directed department officials to identify and implement comprehensive flood protection measures to safeguard water infrastructure.

The measures include:

• Construction of protective walls.
• Strengthening vulnerable water supply installations.
• Structural interventions to prevent flood-related damage.
• Enhanced preparedness for emergency response during heavy rainfall events.

The minister stressed that maintaining a high level of preparedness is essential to effectively address challenges arising from water scarcity, heatwaves, and potential flooding.
