Glasgow, August 01, 2026 : India’s star javelin thrower and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra secured the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, while debutant Yashvir Singh produced a sensational final-round effort to claim bronze, ensuring India finished with two athletes on the podium.
Competing in challenging cold and windy conditions, the 28-year-old Neeraj Chopra registered a season-best throw of 85.83 metres in his second attempt. Although below his usual standards, the effort was enough to secure second place and add another prestigious medal to his illustrious career.
The biggest surprise came from 24-year-old Yashvir Singh, who delivered a remarkable personal-best throw of 85.41 metres in his sixth and final attempt. Entering the last round in seventh position, Yashvir dramatically climbed onto the podium with a career-defining throw, surpassing his previous personal best of 83.72 metres.
India’s Rohit Yadav also competed strongly but finished seventh with a best throw of 81.56 metres.
The gold medal was claimed by Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, whose outstanding 89.75-metre throw in the second round proved unbeatable. Pathirage, the only javelin thrower to have crossed the 90-metre mark this season, reaffirmed his dominance after recording a season-best 92.62 metres while winning the Rome Diamond League earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s defending champion Arshad Nadeem suffered an early exit after failing to progress beyond the first three rounds. His best effort of 77.41 metres left him out of medal contention.
Notably, athletes from the Indian subcontinent swept all three medals in the men’s javelin event, with Sri Lanka winning gold and India taking silver and bronze, making it one of the standout athletics moments of the Games.
