Jammu, July 13, 2026 : Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Kumar Sharma, on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of attempting to reinvent himself as an “anti-BJP warrior” to divert public attention from what he described as the National Conference government’s unfulfilled promises and alleged governance failures.
Addressing the media in Jammu, Sharma claimed that the Chief Minister was trying to reshape his political image after, according to him, disappointing the people of Jammu and Kashmir following the promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections.
“Omar Abdullah is desperately trying to rebrand himself as a warrior against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to escape the anger of the people after allegedly deceiving them with false promises. He now wants to create a new political narrative,” Sharma alleged.
The BJP leader also challenged Abdullah to substantiate his recent allegation that BJP leaders had offered ₹20–30 crore to a National Conference MLA in an attempt to engineer defections within the ruling party.
“Let him place concrete evidence before the people of Jammu and Kashmir. If there is even an iota of truth in his allegation, I will publicly apologise to him,” Sharma said.
He further warned that if the Chief Minister failed to produce evidence supporting his claim, the BJP would be compelled to initiate legal proceedings against him for making what it termed “false and misleading allegations.”
According to Sharma, Abdullah’s accusations were intended to divert attention from growing public dissatisfaction with the National Conference government’s performance.
“Omar Abdullah finds himself trapped by the promises and claims made during the Assembly elections. Now he is trying to play his last political card by portraying himself as a crusader against the BJP before the people of Kashmir,” Sharma alleged.
The Leader of Opposition also claimed that Abdullah was attempting to secure a political legacy by projecting himself as someone who had taken on the BJP despite, according to Sharma, facing an uncertain political future.
“Omar Abdullah should remember that he will be remembered as one of the most ineffective Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir,” Sharma remarked.
He further alleged that instead of focusing on governance and development, the Chief Minister had “wasted two years between marathon tracks and the ski slopes of Gulmarg,” accusing the government of neglecting the aspirations of the people.
The remarks come amid an escalating political confrontation between the ruling National Conference and the BJP over allegations of attempts to poach legislators, the demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, and the broader political discourse ahead of the National Conference’s proposed July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
