New Delhi, August 26, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed his condolences over the loss of lives caused by devastating floods and flash floods in Nepal. He assured that India is ready to extend all possible humanitarian assistance to the neighbouring country during the crisis.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Nepal, PM Modi said India stands firmly with the “sisters and brothers in Nepal” during this difficult hour. He also said that teams from India and Nepal are coordinating closely to strengthen rescue and relief operations.

“Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time. India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts,” Modi said in a post on X.

Indian Embassy Steps Up Rescue Coordination

The Embassy of India in Nepal said it is actively coordinating with the Nepalese authorities to facilitate the early rescue and relief of Indian nationals affected by the severe flash floods.

The Embassy said rescue and relief efforts are being strengthened in coordination with the Government of Nepal and urged affected Indian nationals and their families to contact the emergency helpline numbers for assistance and information.

Over 100 Indians Reported Missing

According to preliminary information released by the Nepal Tourism Board, around 105 Indians were among foreign nationals reported missing following a sudden flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal’s Rasuwa area on Wednesday.

The Nepal Tourism Board said a total of 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, have been reported missing from the affected areas. The preliminary list also includes 37 NRIs reportedly missing from the Himalayan Glacier Area.

The Tourism Board, Tourist Police and other tourism stakeholders are working to verify the whereabouts and safety of tourists and travellers who were present in or travelling through the affected areas when the flash flood struck.

Deaths Confirmed, Rescue Operations Underway

According to reports from Nepal, at least seven people have been confirmed dead following the massive flash floods. Rescue teams have been working continuously, with at least 25 people reportedly rescued by Wednesday afternoon.

The sudden flooding has triggered concerns in several downstream areas, with authorities urging residents living along the Trishuli River to move to safer locations as floodwaters continue to flow downstream.

Authorities Issue Alert Across Multiple Districts

The District Administration Office in Rasuwa has advised residents living in riverside areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

Earlier, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah convened a meeting to review the flood situation and coordinate the government’s response to the emergency.

With rescue and relief operations continuing, authorities on both sides are closely monitoring the situation, particularly the safety of tourists, Indian nationals and other people stranded or reported missing in the affected regions.

India’s assurance of humanitarian assistance comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of the flash floods, while rescue agencies and local authorities intensify efforts to locate missing persons and provide relief to those affected.
