Mumbai, September 11, 2026 : The Indian rupee ended 5 paise lower at ₹95.57 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, extending its decline for the fifth consecutive session.

The rupee opened at ₹95.70 and weakened further to an intra-day low of ₹95.79 before recovering to a high of ₹95.51. Market participants attributed the recovery partly to suspected Reserve Bank of India intervention, a modest recovery in domestic equities from the day’s lows and profit booking in crude oil at higher levels.

📉 Crude Prices, Global Risk Aversion Weigh on Rupee

Forex traders said risk aversion in global markets and elevated crude oil prices continued to put pressure on the Indian currency.

HDFC Securities Senior Research Analyst Dilip Parmar said the rupee recorded its steepest weekly loss since May 15, amid rising crude prices and higher bond yields. He also pointed to persistent geopolitical tensions and sluggish monsoon rainfall as factors weighing on domestic sentiment.

Parmar said ₹95.80 could act as resistance for USD/INR in the near term, while ₹95.15 remains a strong support level.

🛢️ Brent Crude Falls

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 3.28% lower at $104.10 per barrel in futures trade, providing some relief to the rupee.

Mirae Asset Sharekhan Research Analyst Anuj Choudhary said the rupee is expected to maintain a negative bias amid global risk-off sentiment and inflation concerns linked to elevated crude prices. However, potential RBI intervention could provide support at lower levels.

The USD/INR spot rate is expected to remain in the ₹95.45–₹95.90 range, according to Choudhary.

📊 Markets Also End Lower

The dollar index was trading at 99.13, up 0.09%.

On the domestic equity market, the Sensex fell 120.83 points to 74,781.76, while the Nifty declined 79.70 points to 23,398.10.

Exchange data showed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth ₹582 crore on a net basis on Wednesday.

With crude prices, global risk sentiment, geopolitical tensions and RBI intervention all influencing currency movements, market participants are likely to closely watch upcoming US inflation and consumer sentiment data for further direction.
