Jamnagar, September 11, 2026 : Elephant Madhuri, also known as Mahadevi in Kolhapur, is set to return to the city following a reasoned order of the High-Powered Committee (HPC). Vantara has said that her health, welfare and dignity will remain its first priority, regardless of where she is housed.
According to Vantara, Madhuri arrived at its Jamnagar centre on July 30, 2025, in compliance with directions of the HPC that were upheld by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court. The organisation said it did not seek custody of Madhuri but cared for her in accordance with the directions.
🐘 HPC Clears Her Return With Strict Conditions
After hearing the concerned parties, seeking reports and inspecting the facility at Nandani, the HPC issued its order on September 9, 2026, permitting Madhuri to return to Kolhapur.
The order comes with strict conditions:
- 🚫 Madhuri cannot be used for processions or any other purpose.
- 🩺 She must receive round-the-clock care.
- 📅 She must undergo a medical examination every fortnight.
- 📋 Veterinary reports are to be submitted to the competent authorities as directed by the HPC.
Vantara said it respects the authority of the HPC and will fully comply with its directions.
🩺 Vantara Commits to Fortnightly Veterinary Visits
Vantara said Madhuri’s health has been stabilised through sustained veterinary care, while acknowledging that her chronic conditions require continuing treatment, supportive management and regular monitoring.
The organisation said it has supported preparations for her return by helping ensure the availability of suitable living conditions, veterinary infrastructure, medical equipment, medicines and other essential requirements.
Its veterinarians will travel to Kolhapur every fortnight to conduct Madhuri’s medical examination and submit reports to the competent authorities.
🏠 Facility at Nandani Prepared
Vantara said it has also worked on the enclosure and facility at Nandani where Madhuri will return, putting in place the best possible arrangements within the available infrastructure.
Further expansion is currently restricted by town-planning constraints, including a road passing through the Trust’s land and limiting the space available for development.
Vantara said it will remain available to assist the Math in upgrading the facility once Madhuri settles in, if directed by the courts or competent authorities.
🤝 Acknowledges Kolhapur Sentiments
Vantara said it understands the strong sentiments surrounding Madhuri in Kolhapur and reiterated that its approach has consistently been guided by veterinary science and animal welfare.
The organisation also expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court, Bombay High Court, HPC, Maharashtra and Gujarat governments and their officials for their support.
It thanked the Math and people of Kolhapur for their concern for Madhuri and acknowledged PETA India’s role in bringing her condition before the HPC.
Vantara emphasised that its commitment to Madhuri will continue after her return.
