NAGOYA, SEPTEMBER 23, 2026 : Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu finally ended her long wait for an Asian Games medal, winning a historic silver in the women’s 49kg category on a day of mixed fortunes for India at the Asian Games in Nagoya.

The 32-year-old Olympic silver medallist lifted a combined 198kg (88kg snatch + 111kg clean and jerk) to finish second. Her silver marks India’s first Asian Games weightlifting medal since Karnam Malleswari’s silver in 1998.

“Life is now complete,” Mirabai said after securing the long-awaited Asiad medal.

Shooting Adds Two Bronze Medals

India’s shooting campaign had a disappointing outing in the much-anticipated 10m air pistol events, with Manu Bhaker, Suruchi Singh and Esha Singh unable to secure medals.

Bhaker, the only Indian woman pistol shooter to reach the individual final, finished fifth.

India, however, salvaged the day with bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s skeet team events.

The women’s team of Raiza Dhillon, Maheshwari Chauhan and Parinaaz Dhaliwal scored 331 to finish behind China and Kazakhstan.

In the men’s event, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Bhavtegh Singh Gill combined for 346 to claim bronze. Naruka also reached the individual final and finished fourth.

Roshibina Enters Wushu Final

India’s Roshibina Devi Naorem advanced to the women’s 60kg wushu final after defeating Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas 2-0.

She will face China’s Xiaoyu Zhang in the gold-medal bout. Roshibina has previously won a silver and bronze at the Asian Games.

Badminton Team Secures Bronze

India’s men’s badminton team finished with a bronze medal after losing 1-3 to China in the semifinal.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty produced India’s only victory, defeating reigning world champions Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang 21-11, 22-20.

Lakshya Sen lost to world No. 6 Shi Yu Qi 16-21, 18-21, while Ayush Shetty and the second doubles combination of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun were unable to secure wins.

Table Tennis and Squash Advance

Indian mixed doubles pairings Harmeet Desai-Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale-Manush Shah advanced to the table tennis quarterfinals.

Chitale and Shah registered a commanding 3-0 victory over Maldives in the round of 16 and will face Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi Kim and Wong Chun Ting.

In squash, Abhay Singh, Veer Chotrani and Tanvi Khanna progressed with convincing singles victories.

Women’s Hockey Team Rout Thailand

India’s women’s hockey team continued its dominant campaign with a massive 20-1 win over Thailand, recording its third consecutive Pool B victory.

Deepika Sehrawat produced a record-breaking performance, scoring nine goals, converting all nine of her penalty-corner attempts. Navneet Kaur also contributed four goals.

India’s men’s and women’s kabaddi teams also registered comprehensive group-stage victories over Bangladesh and Iran, respectively.
