JAMMU, OCTOBER 10, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Saturday criticised the reported detention of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders in Delhi and questioned the restrictions imposed ahead of the party’s proposed protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Calling the reported detentions wrong, Choudhary stressed that democratic rights, freedom of expression and the independence of constitutional institutions must be protected. He also called for an investigation into allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner and said Kumar should resign on moral grounds to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
Choudhary made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Jammu. His comments came amid opposition protests over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revision and concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission.
Deputy CM Questions Restrictions on Delhi Protest
Responding to questions about the reported detention of CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, Choudhary said preventing political leaders from participating in a peaceful demonstration raised concerns about democratic freedoms.
He questioned whether the situation in the country was any less serious than during the Emergency, referring to the restrictions imposed in the national capital ahead of the proposed protest.
Choudhary argued that bringing large parts of Delhi to a standstill and preventing demonstrators from reaching the protest venue required serious scrutiny.
He maintained that peaceful protest was a democratic right and that restrictions on demonstrators should be examined in light of the circumstances and the applicable law.
The alleged detentions and the reasons for the police action remain matters requiring clarification from the authorities.
Calls for Investigation Into Allegations Against CEC
Choudhary said the allegations against Gyanesh Kumar warranted an investigation and argued that transparency was essential to maintaining confidence in elections.
He claimed that the allegations had also been raised by two of the Chief Election Commissioner’s own colleagues, rather than originating solely from political opponents. He called for the matter to be examined through an appropriate investigative process.
The Deputy Chief Minister further said Kumar should resign on moral grounds if democratic institutions and public confidence in the electoral system were to be safeguarded.
His remarks reflect the opposition’s position in the ongoing political dispute over the Election Commission and electoral procedures. The allegations, however, should be distinguished from any findings established through an independent investigation.
Opposition Delegation Meets President Droupadi Murmu
Referring to Friday’s meeting between an opposition delegation, including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and President Droupadi Murmu, Choudhary said approaching the President was a legitimate democratic step.
He described the President as a custodian of the Constitution and said the delegation’s decision was guided by concerns about democracy and the independence of constitutional institutions.
According to Choudhary, protecting democracy requires institutions to function independently and transparently, without undermining public confidence in the electoral process.
The meeting formed part of the opposition’s efforts to raise its concerns at the highest constitutional level.
Choudhary Criticises Political Labelling of Protesters
The Deputy Chief Minister also criticised what he described as attempts to discredit public demonstrations by attaching political or national labels to participants.
Referring to previous protests, including the farmers’ agitation, he said demonstrators had been labelled Khalistanis, Pakistanis or given other tags that, in his view, diverted attention from their demands.
He questioned how long public concerns would continue to be overshadowed by such accusations and urged political leaders to focus on the issues raised by protesters.
His remarks underscored a broader argument that peaceful demonstrations should be assessed on their demands and conduct rather than dismissed through generalised labels.
Unemployment Among Youth a Major Concern
Choudhary also highlighted unemployment, saying young people across India were struggling to find jobs, including the children of BJP workers.
He alleged that unemployment was not receiving sufficient attention in public and political debate and urged leaders to address the concerns of educated young people.
Emphasising the personal and social dimensions of the issue, he said that even his own children were unemployed.
The remarks brought employment and economic opportunities into a discussion otherwise dominated by electoral transparency and the handling of political protests.
Youth unemployment remains an important policy issue because it affects household finances, economic participation and public expectations of government performance.
Questions Raised Over Police Treatment of Young Protesters
The Deputy Chief Minister also expressed concern over the reported treatment of young demonstrators, particularly women, by police in Delhi.
He questioned the use of force and detention against young people who, according to him, were seeking to exercise their rights and raise legitimate demands.
Invoking the ideals associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Choudhary argued that the dignity and rights of women protesters should be respected.
His comments added a human-rights dimension to the political dispute, with particular emphasis on peaceful assembly, the conduct of law-enforcement authorities and the treatment of women participating in demonstrations.
Democracy and Institutional Independence at the Centre of Debate
Choudhary’s statement links several issues currently being raised by opposition parties: the reported detention of CJP leaders, allegations concerning the Election Commission, restrictions on demonstrations and demands for greater institutional accountability.
His position is that public confidence in democracy depends on transparent electoral procedures, independent constitutional institutions and respect for peaceful protest.
The authorities’ explanation for the reported detentions, any formal response from the Chief Election Commissioner and the outcome of any investigation would be important in establishing the facts surrounding the controversy.
The episode has added to the wider political debate over electoral transparency, democratic freedoms and the responsibilities of public institutions.
