SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 10, 2026 :   Parties belonging to the INDIA bloc on Saturday organised protest marches across the Kashmir Valley, accusing the Election Commission of irregularities and raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstrations formed part of the opposition INDIA bloc’s nationwide agitation against what its leaders described as “vote chori”. The protests focused on allegations concerning the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral roll revision process.

Similar demonstrations were held in Srinagar and several district headquarters across the Valley, bringing Congress, National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) workers together under the opposition alliance’s campaign.

Protest at Congress Headquarters in Srinagar

In Srinagar, scores of workers from the Congress, National Conference and PDP assembled outside the Congress headquarters on M.A. Road.

The protesters raised slogans against the BJP-led central government and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his resignation over the allegations surrounding the electoral process.

The demonstrators attempted to march towards the main road but were stopped by police, who did not allow them to leave the Congress office complex.

The protest continued for some time before the participants dispersed peacefully, according to the initial report. No further details regarding arrests, injuries or clashes were provided.

INDIA Bloc Expands Demonstrations Across the Valley

The protest in Srinagar was part of a broader mobilisation across Kashmir. INDIA bloc parties also organised similar marches at several district headquarters, indicating that the campaign extended beyond the summer capital.

The participation of workers from three major regional and national opposition parties highlighted their coordinated effort to raise concerns over electoral administration.

The demonstrations were aligned with the opposition alliance’s nationwide agitation, which seeks accountability from the Election Commission over allegations of irregularities in electoral rolls and related procedures.

Electoral Roll Revision at the Centre of the Dispute

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has become a point of political contention, with opposition parties raising concerns about the accuracy, transparency and implementation of the process.

Electoral roll revisions are intended to maintain accurate voter lists by reviewing entries and addressing issues such as eligible voters being omitted and ineligible or duplicate entries being identified.

The INDIA bloc parties have alleged irregularities in the process and used the slogan “vote chori” to express their concerns. These claims represent the opposition’s allegations and should be distinguished from independently established findings.

A comprehensive assessment would require examination of the specific allegations, relevant electoral records and responses from the Election Commission.

Demand for Chief Election Commissioner’s Resignation

The protesters directly targeted CEC Gyanesh Kumar, demanding that he step down over the issues raised by the opposition.

Their demand reflects a wider political dispute over the Election Commission’s functioning and the safeguards needed to maintain confidence in electoral processes.

The Commission’s role in overseeing elections and maintaining electoral rolls makes transparency, procedural fairness and public confidence central to the debate.

The initial report did not include a response from the Election Commission or the central government to the allegations raised during the demonstrations.

Police Restrict March, Protest Ends Peacefully

In Srinagar, police prevented protesters from moving beyond the Congress office complex towards the main road. Despite the restriction, the demonstration continued within the premises before dispersing peacefully.

The incident illustrates the competing considerations involved in public demonstrations, including the right to peaceful assembly and the authorities’ management of public movement and security.

The available report does not specify the legal grounds for restricting the march or whether similar restrictions were imposed at other protest locations across the Valley.

Political Significance

The demonstrations brought electoral transparency and the administration of voter lists into focus in Kashmir’s political landscape.

For the INDIA bloc, the coordinated protests provided an opportunity to amplify its objections to the SIR process and demand accountability from the Election Commission. For the authorities, the allegations raise questions that require specific evidence, official clarification and transparent examination.

Further developments may depend on responses from the Election Commission, any additional evidence presented by opposition parties and whether the nationwide agitation continues.
