Srinagar, October 21, 2026 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has called for transforming Basohli into a globally recognised centre of art, culture, literature and creativity, highlighting the historic town’s rich artistic legacy and its potential to emerge as an international destination for cultural exchange.

Congratulating the Department of Culture, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Vishwasthali NGO, the Divisional Commissioner and the District Administration on the successful organisation of the 4th edition of Basohli Utsav, Sinha praised the people of Basohli for their enthusiastic participation in making the festival a success.

Basohli to Emerge Among India’s Cultural Capitals

In his message marking the culmination of the festival, the Lieutenant Governor said Basohli was deeply rooted in tradition while remaining a symbol of imagination, innovation and creativity.

He expressed his vision of establishing the town as a vibrant cultural destination where renowned artists, writers, scholars and creative practitioners from across the world could come together to exchange ideas and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Sinha said steps had already been taken towards this goal, while acknowledging that sustained efforts were required to give Basohli a prominent place on the national and international cultural map.

Preserving the Legacy of Basohli Painting

Highlighting the historic significance of the renowned Basohli school of painting, the Lieutenant Governor observed that art preserves the memories of civilisation and connects generations through a shared cultural identity.

He expressed confidence that the cultural revival underway in Basohli would encourage young people to preserve their heritage while creating an artistic legacy for future generations.

Sinha described the town’s renewed cultural momentum as a matter of pride for the nation and called for continued efforts to protect its distinctive artistic traditions.

Support for Artisans Under PM Vishwakarma Scheme

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”, the Lieutenant Governor said artists and artisans were receiving growing recognition and support.

He urged officials to ensure that eligible artisans receive timely access to training, credit facilities, modern tools, design assistance and market linkages under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme.

He also encouraged young people to combine traditional knowledge with innovation and use digital platforms and e-commerce to promote Basohli’s cultural products and artistic heritage to wider audiences worldwide.

‘Shakti Parampara’ Highlights Cultural Heritage

Sinha appreciated the focus on “Shakti Parampara” as the central theme of this year’s Basohli Utsav, emphasising the importance of celebrating and preserving India’s diverse cultural traditions.

He called upon artists, cultural organisations, government departments and local communities to work collectively towards safeguarding the region’s heritage while creating new opportunities for creativity, cultural tourism and economic growth.

Concluding his message, the Lieutenant Governor urged society to honour artists and artisans and inspire the younger generation to take pride in its roots.

He said Basohli should be recognised not only for its glorious past but also for a confident and creative present, with ambitions that extend to the global stage.
