BEIJING | October 27, 2026 : China has asserted that it is strictly adhering to agreements and mutual understandings reached with India on border issues, while defending its routine patrol activities along the disputed frontier. The statement comes amid continuing concerns from New Delhi over Chinese forces allegedly deviating from established patrolling patterns at certain locations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The latest exchange highlights a delicate balancing act between the two Asian powers: maintaining peace along the border while rebuilding bilateral relations after years of military tensions.
🗣️ What Has China Said?
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks on Monday during a media briefing in Beijing.
“China strictly abides by the relevant agreements and common understandings reached between the two countries, and conducts normal border patrol and control activities to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and stability in the border areas,” Guo said.
He added that Beijing and New Delhi continue to communicate through diplomatic and military channels.
China also called on India to work jointly towards implementing existing understandings and maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border.
The statement reflects Beijing’s position that its patrol activities are consistent with its agreements with India.
🇮🇳 India Flags Deviations From Established Patrolling Patterns
China’s comments followed remarks last week by Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who said the situation along the LAC is disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns.
Jaiswal stressed that peace and tranquillity in border areas are essential for the overall development of India-China relations.
His comments came in response to observations by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur, who said confrontations with Chinese troops continue at several locations along the border in Arunachal Pradesh.
India has maintained that existing diplomatic and military mechanisms remain important for resolving outstanding issues and preventing misunderstandings or miscalculations.
🏔️ Why the LAC Remains So Sensitive
The Line of Actual Control separates areas controlled by India and China, but the two countries do not agree on the entire alignment of the boundary.
Differences over the perceived location of the LAC can lead to competing patrols, face-offs and confrontations, making communication and established border protocols particularly important.
Relations deteriorated sharply following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020, after which both sides maintained a substantial military presence during a prolonged border stand-off lasting more than four years.
Although subsequent measures have helped create opportunities for diplomatic engagement, unresolved boundary issues continue to complicate the relationship.
🤝 Modi–Xi Talks and the Push to Rebuild Relations
India and China have taken several steps over the past year to stabilise ties and restore communication.
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Modi emphasised that both countries should remain sensitive to each other’s core concerns and guide their relationship through the principle of the “three mutuals”:
- Mutual respect
- Mutual sensitivity
- Mutual interest
The framework underscores the need for both sides to recognise each other’s concerns while pursuing a more stable relationship.
⚖️ The Road Ahead: Dialogue, Restraint and Verifiable Progress
China’s latest statement signals its stated commitment to existing agreements, while India’s concerns underline the importance of consistent implementation on the ground.
Diplomatic assurances alone may not be enough to eliminate friction. Sustained progress will depend on both countries following agreed protocols, maintaining effective communication between military commanders and diplomats, and addressing disputed issues without allowing local confrontations to escalate.
For two major Asian powers with significant economic and geopolitical interests, peace along the frontier is more than a border-management issue—it is a foundation for broader regional stability.
The key question is whether commitments made through diplomatic channels will translate into lasting peace and predictability along the LAC.
