NEW DELHI | October 27, 2026 : The political confrontation over alleged electoral irregularities has intensified, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to suppress a public movement challenging what the opposition calls “vote chori.”
Kharge alleged that the government was relying on diversionary tactics and propaganda to deflect attention from questions surrounding electoral integrity and the role of the Election Commission of India.
The Congress chief said the INDIA bloc would continue its democratic struggle to protect citizens’ voting rights and defend the Constitution.
The controversy has added another flashpoint to the already heated political battle between the ruling BJP and the opposition.
🗣️ Kharge Targets Modi and Shah Over ‘Vote Chori’
In a post on X on Tuesday, Kharge accused the government of attempting to contain the growing political movement over alleged electoral irregularities.
“As more skeletons tumble out of the Election Commission’s cupboard, exposing Vote Chori, Modi-Shah are trying hard to suppress the people’s movement! Why are they protecting CEC Gyanesh Kumar?” Kharge wrote.
He further alleged that the government’s response was damaging its credibility and undermining democratic institutions.
“This diversionary tactics and bogus propaganda is only discrediting Modi Govt, and tarnishing our Democracy!” he said.
Kharge also shared a graphic listing examples of alleged electoral irregularities from different parts of the country. The claims form part of the opposition’s broader campaign demanding scrutiny of the electoral process.
Important distinction: These are allegations made by the Congress leadership. Their validity must be assessed through verifiable evidence, official records and appropriate legal or electoral procedures.
⚖️ Why Is Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the Centre of the Row?
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has become a central figure in the political dispute, with Congress accusing the Modi government of shielding him from scrutiny.
Kharge had made similar allegations on Monday, claiming that the government was attempting to protect the CEC despite what he described as repeated revelations of electoral wrongdoing.
The opposition’s criticism raises questions about the independence and accountability of electoral institutions—issues that are fundamental to public confidence in elections.
The government and the Election Commission’s responses, along with independently verifiable evidence, remain important to assessing the competing claims.
🔥 BJP Hits Back Over Kharge’s Remarks on Modi
The latest accusations come amid an intensifying BJP offensive against Kharge over a controversial remark he made about the prime minister.
At an event in Patna on Sunday, organised to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Shri Krishna Singh, Kharge made the remark “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” in response to an audience member who said that the prime minister would not go anywhere.
The comment triggered a political controversy, with the BJP condemning it as undignified and attacking the Congress over its language towards Modi.
The BJP has argued that voters have previously punished the opposition for insulting the prime minister and would do so again.
The dispute has therefore expanded beyond electoral allegations into a wider battle over political rhetoric, public credibility and the conduct of competing parties.
📢 INDIA Bloc Plans Further Political Action
Kharge’s remarks come ahead of planned INDIA bloc activities, including what the report describes as a “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a bloc rally scheduled for November 1.
The report also refers to October 30 as a key date in the opposition’s planned campaign.
These moves are expected to keep electoral integrity and the Election Commission’s accountability at the forefront of the political debate.
For the opposition, the campaign is about defending voting rights and constitutional safeguards. For the BJP, the controversy comes amid its efforts to counter Congress allegations and challenge the opposition’s political messaging.
🗳️ The Bigger Issue: Public Trust in Elections
At the heart of the dispute lies a fundamental democratic principle: voters must have confidence that elections are conducted fairly, transparently and according to the law.
Allegations of electoral manipulation deserve serious examination when supported by credible evidence. Equally, accusations must not be treated as established facts without verification.
The Election Commission’s independence, transparent procedures, accessible records and effective mechanisms for investigating complaints are essential to maintaining public confidence.
As the political confrontation intensifies, the critical questions are whether the allegations can be substantiated, how the institutions concerned respond and whether the dispute leads to greater transparency.
Democracy is strengthened not by political slogans alone, but by evidence, accountability, independent institutions and the protection of every eligible citizen’s vote.
