Srinagar, July 8, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Tuesday clarified that the recently revised school timings are not final and can be reviewed, following strong public and political reactions.

The Education Department had ordered changes in school timings across Kashmir and the winter zones of Jammu as schools reopened post a 15-day summer break caused by an intense heatwave. As per the new schedule, schools within Srinagar municipal limits will operate from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, and those outside from 8:00 am to 12 noon — a significant shift from the earlier 9 am start.

The changes sparked criticism from parents and opposition parties, who questioned their feasibility.

“I’ve received numerous calls regarding the timing shift. I want to assure people that this decision is not final. If needed, adjustments will be made,” Itoo told reporters during her visit to Kulgam.

The minister said the revised schedule was introduced to help students complete their syllabus in time for October exams. “Our priority is ensuring students are prepared for the upcoming November session. That’s why we reopened schools and adjusted timings,” she said.

On whether the new schedule would remain, Itoo said, “We are monitoring the situation. If the need arises, changes will be made in consultation with stakeholders.”

Heavy rainfall on Monday led to a drop in temperatures across Kashmir, offering some relief. The Meteorological Department has forecast more showers over the next two days.
