Leh , September 24, 2025 : Fresh unrest broke out in Ladakh on Wednesday after protests and a complete shutdown, called by the youth wing of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), escalated into violence in Leh town. The agitation is centered around demands for early talks with the Centre regarding statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Protests Turn Violent
According to officials, what began as a peaceful protest turned tense after some youths allegedly resorted to stone-pelting. Police responded with teargas shells and baton charge to disperse the crowd. A security vehicle was also torched outside the BJP office in Leh, leading to heightened tensions.
Hunger Strike Adds Fuel to Agitation
The LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) are scheduled to hold their next round of talks with the Centre on October 6. However, protestors have been demanding that the dialogue be advanced in view of the worsening situation.
The protest comes amid a 35-day-long hunger strike led by noted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Two of the 15 hunger strikers were shifted to hospital on Tuesday after their health deteriorated, further intensifying public anger.
Heavy Deployment in Leh
Authorities confirmed that additional security forces have been rushed to Leh to restore order and prevent escalation.
